NM 001 THE RUGS BLAME IT ON ME 7" 01.2019

The Rugs were formed at 7.30 pm on Friday 16th December 1994, in the function room of
a pub on Chester's medieval Rows. That led to an invitation to perform at the Chester
Fringe Festival the next year, on a bill with the cream of the Piao! record label,
namely Emperor Julian and Heck. The band then gigged until the end of the Millennium,
splitting their time between Cambridge, Whitchurch in Shropshire and Chester for
logistical reasons. Things went quiet for a while but despite an emigrating drummer,
they got their act together enough to record this, their debut single. 'Blame It On
Me' is a longtime tuneful outlier in their sets, utilising an insistent hook, a simple
arrangement, three verses of post-teen regret and a final crescendo which will bury
itself deep in your musical memory longtime. The b-side, 'Voice of a Generation
(With Nothing To Say) is more typical of their sound live. Both numbers are ably
produced by Anthony Chapman of Collapsed Lung, and were recorded at Half-ton Studios
in Cambridge. Limited edition pressing of 300, unnumbered - design genius Shawn
wouldn't let us taint his beautiful minimalist cover.
